Introducing the Arbequina Olive Tree, a Mediterranean gem that brings a touch of Spain’s sun-soaked landscapes to your garden. This variety is renowned for its high yield and oil-rich fruits. The tree itself is a sight to behold, with an upright growth habit that makes it a perfect fit for Super High-Density plantings. The oil extracted from its fruits is a culinary delight, offering a sweet, delicate, and fragrant flavor profile with a distinct fruitiness and minimal bitterness or spiciness.
Adaptable and Hardy
The Arbequina is a hardy tree that thrives in a variety of conditions. It’s self-fertile and requires a modest 300 chilling hours, making it suitable for many climates. Despite its rapid growth rate, the Arbequina has low nutrient requirements and performs best in less fertile soils. This makes it an ideal choice for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance yet productive tree.
Planting and Pruning
When it comes to planting, the Arbequina is versatile and can be established in many areas, including Florida, provided the soil is well-drained. While it can tolerate mild saline conditions and a pH of up to 8.5, it prefers sandy soils to prevent root rot diseases in wet conditions. Pruning is an essential part of the tree’s care, helping to shape the tree for easier harvest, improve air movement to reduce fungal disease, and regulate flowering.
Fruiting and Harvest
The Arbequina is an alternate-year-bearing species, typically producing a heavy crop every other year. Its small, fleshy olives transition from green to light pink, and finally to a glossy black when fully ripened on the tree. While the olives are not typically eaten raw due to their natural bitterness, they are highly prized for the high-quality oil they produce. Experience the joy of harvesting your own olives and savor the exquisite oil they yield with the Arbequina Olive Tree.
