The Bacon Avocado, a Mexican variety similar to Haas, is a delight for the senses. Its fruit, slightly larger than Haas, boasts a dark green, almost black skin. The creamy flavor of the fruit is rich and satisfying, and the skin peels quite easily, enhancing the overall eating experience.
This variety is known for its exceptional cold resistance, making it a good selection for connoisseurs in USDA hardiness zones 9 and 10. It has a history in both California and Florida, and while it’s not a major commercial variety, it does see some commercial planting due to its moderate yield and manageable maintenance needs.
The tree produces an average yield of fruit, providing a steady supply throughout the season from September to October. The consistency of the crop is commendable, almost always ensuring a supply of fruit.
For home planting, the Bacon Avocado is an excellent choice. It’s very easy to care for and provides a high yield, making it ideal for those who want to enjoy fresh avocados at home. The tree size is about 30’ x 20’, and the fruit size ranges from 0.75 – 1 lbs (12 – 16 oz). The flower type is B.
In summary, the Bacon Avocado offers a premium eating experience with a perfect seed-to-pulp ratio, a steady supply of fruit, and is a dependable choice for regular harvests. It’s suitable for both commercial and home planting, especially for those who enjoy gardening as a hobby.
