Cheena Jackfruit – Hybrid with Soft, Fragrant Flesh

Cheena is a natural hybrid between jackfruit and cempedak, offering a unique combination of traits from both species. The tree has a low, spreading growth habit, making it easy to manage in home gardens, and can be pruned annually to maintain a compact size.

Tree Characteristics:

  • Size & Growth: The tree can be kept at a manageable height of around 8 feet (2.5 meters) with regular pruning. Its open, spreading form makes it easy to care for and harvest.
  • Production Capability: Cheena is a highly productive variety, yielding between 50-70 kg (110-154 lbs) of fruit per tree annually, making it an excellent choice for both home growers and small-scale farmers.
  • Temperature Tolerance: Thrives in USDA Zones 9B-11, where tropical or subtropical conditions are present.

Fruit Characteristics:

  • Fruit Size: The fruits are small and uniform, usually weighing around 5 pounds each. Their long, narrow shape distinguishes them from other varieties.
  • Texture & Flavor: The deep orange flesh is soft, with a slight fibrous texture and an earthy, rich aroma. Its flavor is known for being sweet and pleasantly intense, making it a popular choice for fresh eating.
  • Ease of Preparation: Cheena is notable for being easier to prepare compared to many other jackfruit varieties. The fruit can be cleaned and ready to eat in as little as 15 minutes, making it a convenient option.
  • Latex Type: The fruit has low latex, making it easier to handle and clean.
  • Harvest Time: The fruit ripens in mid-summer, and the spines on the skin soften and yellow slightly as the fruit reaches maturity.

Care Tips:

Cheena prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Annual pruning helps maintain its compact size, and regular care ensures healthy fruit production year after year.
