Edward Mango
Discover the Edward Mango Tree, a remarkable addition to any tropical fruit garden.
Growth Rate & Size: The Edward Mango Tree boasts a moderately vigorous growth rate, forming a densely compact canopy that can be easily maintained at a height of 10-15 feet with regular pruning. This makes it an excellent choice for those looking to manage tree size without sacrificing fruit quality.
Fruit Characteristics: Edward Mangos are small to medium-sized, typically weighing between 0.8 to 1.5 pounds. The fruit’s skin is a striking yellowish-green, often developing a beautiful orange blush when exposed to ample sunlight. Inside, you’ll find a juicy, fiberless, yellowish-orange flesh with a medium-firm texture that’s both tender and creamy.
Flavor Profile: Renowned for its classic mango flavor, the Edward Mango offers a rich and sweet taste that is sure to delight. While the flavor is predominantly mango, some may detect subtle hints of honey, citrus, peach, and even coconut. This makes it a favorite among those who appreciate a traditional mango taste with a touch of complexity.
Flowering & Production: The Edward Mango Tree is known for its consistent flowering, often producing at least two blooms per season. While it may have a reputation for being a shy bearer, it reliably produces fruit each year. The overall yield can vary based on the presence of other mango trees nearby, which can influence pollination success.
Disease Resistance: With moderate resistance to Anthracnose, the Edward Mango Tree is well-suited for growing in areas with higher humidity and low wind conditions. This resilience makes it a valuable addition to any garden, especially in less-than-ideal environments.
Harvesting: Edward Mangos are typically ready for harvest from May to July. The best time to pick the fruit is when it begins to turn a greenish-yellow color. The fruit is forgiving when it comes to picking, ensuring a delicious taste whether harvested early or late.
History & Heritage: Named after Edward Simmonds, who planted the first tree in Miami, Florida in the 1930s, the Edward Mango Tree is a successful hybrid of Indochinese and Indian mango varieties. It has contributed to the development of several popular cultivars, making it an important part of mango cultivation history.
Why Choose Edward Mango?: If you’re looking for a mango tree that combines classic flavor, manageable growth, and reliable production, the Edward Mango Tree is an excellent choice. Its rich history and unique characteristics make it a standout addition to any tropical fruit garden.
