Introducing the Haden Mango, a cultivar that holds a special place in the world of mangoes as it was the first superior mango cultivar selected and named in Florida. This variety is known for its full sweet flavor and excellent eating quality, making it a delightful addition to any fruit basket.
The Haden Mango is a sight to behold with its deep yellow base complemented by a crimson blush, making it as pleasing to the eye as it is to the palate. The tree itself is a vigorous grower, developing into a large plant with an open rounded canopy. It’s an excellent choice for those who have the space for a medium to large tree.
One of the unique characteristics of the Haden Mango is its ripening process. The fruit ripens from June to July, and interestingly, it tends to ripen from the inside out, becoming slightly soft around the seed. This feature, along with its susceptibility to spotting caused by fungus, are some of the challenges that come with this variety. However, these do not overshadow the many benefits it offers.
The Haden Mango is not just a fruit; it’s a piece of history. It kickstarted the Florida Mango Industry and paved the way for a new generation of mango cultivars. Its growth habit is vigorous and spreading, producing a dense canopy. With annual pruning, the tree can be kept between 20 – 25 feet tall.
When perfectly ripe and mature, the Haden Mango exudes a delightful mango aroma with subtle hints of peaches. The firm yellow flesh of the fruit contains a moderate amount of fiber, contributing to its distinctive ‘classic mango’ taste. Depending on when the fruit is harvested, you might also detect a subtle tartness, occasionally accompanied by delicate notes of peach.
The Haden Mango is a commercial variety, which means it has a longer shelf life and can withstand being picked slightly early without significant repercussions. This makes it a practical and rewarding choice for both commercial growers and home gardeners.
In summary, the Haden Mango is a classic, historical, and flavorful variety that offers a unique blend of beauty, taste, and resilience. It’s an excellent choice for anyone looking to add a touch of tropical flavor to their garden.
