Kadota Fig Tree

Discover the Delightful Kadota Fig Tree for Your Garden!

The Kadota Fig Tree, also known as the Florentine or Dottato, is a versatile and rewarding addition to any garden. This deciduous tree thrives in USDA hardiness zones 6 to 10, making it suitable for a wide range of climates.

Growth Rate and Size The Kadota Fig Tree boasts a moderate growth rate, reaching a mature height and width of 12 to 25 feet. Its lush, dark green leaves are round and can grow up to 10 inches long, each featuring three to five lobes. This tree’s impressive canopy provides ample shade and adds a touch of elegance to your landscape.

Appearance The Kadota fig is medium-sized with thick, light-green or yellow skin and a delightful light pink to amber flesh. The fruit is seedless, with a short neck and an open ostiole sealed with nectar, ensuring a sweet and juicy bite every time.

Taste and Culinary Uses Renowned for its mildly sweet, honey-like flavor, the Kadota fig becomes even more delectable when cooked or made into preserves. Its chewy texture and fruity undertones make it a favorite for fresh eating, canning, drying, and baking. Impressively, this variety is also the secret behind the beloved Fig Newton cookies!

Historical Significance The Kadota Fig Tree has a rich history dating back to Roman times, where it was first cultivated for its excellent drying qualities and thick skin. Known as the Dottato in Italy, this variety has been cherished for centuries and continues to be a popular choice for fig enthusiasts.

Care and Maintenance Kadota Fig Trees prefer full sunlight and well-draining, loamy soil with a pH of 6.0-6.5. They require regular watering, especially during hot spells, to ensure healthy growth and abundant fruit production. Fertilize with a slow-release formula in the spring to support vigorous growth and fruiting.
