The Kathy K-3 Mango, a gem from the heart of Boynton Beach, Florida, is a medium-sized tree that boasts a lush and moderately vigorous growth. Its spreading branches form a dense canopy, creating a picturesque sight in any garden. While it’s not suited for long-term container growth, with regular pruning, it can be maintained at a manageable height of 10 to 15 feet.
The Kathy K-3 is a prolific bearer, consistently producing a good to heavy yield of medium-sized mangoes, each weighing between 1 to 1.5 lbs. These mangoes are a part of the esteemed Indochinese flavor group, known for their unique and complex flavor profiles.
When ripe, the Kathy K-3 Mango exudes a delightful aroma, a blend of peach, apricot, and orange notes that is sure to tantalize your senses. The fruit’s flesh is a vibrant yellow, completely devoid of fibers, and has a juicy, almost melting texture. This texture is a characteristic trait of the Zill Indochinese mangoes.
In terms of flavor, the Kathy K-3 Mango is a treat for the taste buds. It shares a flavor profile with the Sweet Tart and Zill Indochinese, offering a complex tropical flavor that strikes a perfect balance between sweet and tangy. Each bite reveals subtle undertones of vanilla, apricot, and peach, culminating in a well-rounded and delightful taste. While it’s milder than the Sweet Tart, it retains the much-loved ‘zing’ of a perfectly ripe Sweet Tart.
The Kathy K-3 Mango is a mid-season variety, typically bearing fruit from June to July. However, its potential for early and late blooms extends its season, allowing you to enjoy its delicious fruits from late May to late July.
When the fruit transitions to an amber yellow color, it’s a sign that the Kathy K-3 Mango is perfectly ripe and ready to be savored. This mango variety was first propagated by Gary Zill, and its original planting name was K-3.
In summary, the Kathy K-3 Mango is more than just a fruit tree. It’s a testament to the beauty and diversity of nature, offering not just delicious fruits but also enhancing the aesthetic appeal of your garden. With its unique features and delightful fruits, it’s a worthy addition to any plant nursery.
