Lemon Meringue Mango Tree
The Lemon Meringue Mango Tree, also known as Po Pyu Kalay, is a standout among mango varieties. This medium to large-sized tree is renowned for its vigorous growth and upright habit, forming an open canopy. With regular pruning, it can be maintained at a manageable height of 10 to 20 feet.
The tree is known for its prolific fruit production, often yielding clusters of small, golden-yellow mangoes that weigh between 0.3 to 0.75 lbs. The fruit’s size can be increased through thinning, allowing more energy to be directed to the remaining fruit.
The Lemon Meringue Mango is a citrus-flavored variety, with an oblong and elongated shape similar to other varieties like Lemon Zest, Orange Sherbet, or Nam Doc Mai #4. As the fruit ripens, its skin transforms into an attractive golden hue.
The aroma of the Lemon Meringue Mango is a unique blend of spicy-mango and citrus. The fruit’s flesh is light yellow, fiberless, soft, creamy, and incredibly juicy. The flavor profile is a delightful balance of sugary sweetness and tart citrus notes, reminiscent of a perfectly ripened lemon. As the fruit matures, its flavor intensifies, becoming progressively sweeter.
One of the unique features of the Lemon Meringue Mango is its polyembryonic seeds. This means that a seed from a Lemon Meringue Mango can potentially grow into another Lemon Meringue Mango Tree.
The Lemon Meringue Mango Tree is an early-season variety, with most of its fruit ripening all at once in May and June. It’s also worth noting that the tree is highly resistant to Anthracnose, a common fungal disease in mango trees.
The Lemon Meringue Mango Tree, introduced to the United States from Myanmar in 1995, was one of the first ‘citrus’ mangoes in the country. Its distinctive flavor and reliable fruit production make it a favorite among mango enthusiasts and a fantastic addition to any plant nursery.
Please note that the Lemon Meringue Mango Tree is not suitable for long-term container growth and is not considered a “condo” mango. It’s best suited for planting in the ground where it can reach its full potential.
With its unique flavor profile, abundant fruit production, and attractive appearance, the Lemon Meringue Mango Tree is sure to be a hit with your customers. It’s not just a tree; it’s a taste sensation that brings the tropics to your backyard.
