M-4 Mango Tree: A Late-Season Tropical Delight

Unveiled in 2017, the M-4 Mango Tree has swiftly gained recognition for its unique attributes. This medium-sized tree is a standout in the realm of coconut-flavored mangoes, offering a late-season harvest of exceptionally tasty fruits.

The M-4 Mango Tree exhibits a moderately vigorous growth pattern, spreading to form an open canopy. With regular pruning, it can be comfortably maintained at a height of 10 – 15 feet. However, it’s not suited for long-term container growth or as a “condo” mango due to its growth habit.

From a young age, the M-4 Mango Tree is a reliable producer, yielding a good to heavy crop of small to medium-sized fruits, each weighing between 0.6 – 1.3 lbs. The mangoes are a true delight, with a sweet aroma complemented by subtle citrus notes. The light-yellow, fiberless flesh is smooth and creamy, offering a firm yet melt-in-your-mouth texture.

The flavor profile of M-4 Mangoes is rich and complex, with a sweet, coconutty taste balanced by a subtle sub-acid citrus component. Compared to other mangoes in its flavor class, the M-4 has a more pronounced coconut flavor, akin to the Sugarloaf variety.

M-4 Mangoes are a true late-season variety, typically harvested from July to August, and sometimes even into September.

The M-4 Mango Tree was first propagated by Gary Zill in Boynton Beach, Florida. It’s a seedling of the Keitt Mango, with Gary believed to be the pollinating parent. The M-4 is also a sibling of several other popular varieties, including Coconut Cream, Pineapple Pleasure, Cotton Candy, Pina Colada, and Honey Kiss.

Please note that the M-4 Mango is somewhat susceptible to Bacterial Black Spot, and color is not a reliable indicator of ripeness as the fruit develops little to no color.

In conclusion, the M-4 Mango Tree is an excellent choice for those seeking a late-season mango with a truly tropical taste. Its exceptional flavor and consistent production make it a worthy addition to any garden or nursery.
