The Neelum Mango Tree is a compact, slow-growing variety that brings the exotic flavors of India right to your garden. Despite their small size, Neelum mangoes are bursting with a classic, sweet dessert flavor that will leave you wanting more. These mangoes are among the latest to ripen, typically from mid-August to October, extending your mango season well into the fall.

This tree is perfect for small spaces and can be easily shaped with annual pruning. It thrives in containers, making it an ideal “condo” mango. Despite its modest size, the Neelum Mango Tree is a prolific bearer, consistently producing a good to heavy crop of small fruits weighing between 0.5 – 0.75 lbs. With a moderately vigorous and spreading growth habit, the Neelum forms a dense canopy that can be maintained at a height of 6 – 10 feet.

Neelum mangoes have deep yellow to orange, fiberless flesh with a firm texture, perfect for culinary uses. Their flavor is intensely sweet with a strong sub-acid component and a resinous spice, offering a bold taste that some might find overpowering but others will adore. For the best flavor, pick Neelum mangoes when they are mature but not fully ripe. Look for the fruit to transition from green to a lighter shade of green. To avoid vegetable-like hints in the flavor, let them ripen off the tree in a paper bag for a few days.

This variety is resistant to common mango diseases like Anthracnose, Bacterial Black Spot, and Powdery Mildew, making it a hardy choice for less-than-ideal conditions. Introduced to Florida in 1978 by Frank Smathers Jr., the Neelum Mango Tree has since become a beloved addition to many gardens, especially those with high humidity and low wind conditions.
