The Hall Avocado is a delightful addition to any garden, known for its pear-shaped, delicious fruits. This tree is a marvel of nature, demonstrating impressive cold tolerance, making it a suitable choice for regions in USDA Hardiness Zones 9B and above.
The Hall Avocado tree is a moderate to large-sized tree, reaching heights of 30 feet and spreading about 20 feet wide. It’s a prolific producer, consistently yielding small to medium-sized fruits that typically weigh between 0.8 – 1.5 lbs. The fruits are not very watery, a unique characteristic for a Florida Avocado, and can be enjoyed during the holiday season, from Thanksgiving through Christmas.
One of the fascinating aspects of the Hall Avocado tree is its flowering pattern. The tree is a Type A flower, meaning the female flowers open in the morning and male flowers in the afternoon. To maximize fruit production, it’s recommended to plant it near a Type B Avocado tree with a similar fruiting season.
The Hall Avocado is a hybrid of Guatemalan and West Indian varieties, sharing the cold tolerance traits of its parentage. The fruits boast a vibrant green, thick skin that is smooth and glossy, and can be easily peeled off without creating a mess.
Inside, you’ll find a deep yellow, dry, and dense flesh that has a distinct nutty flavor that will captivate your taste buds. The oil content is notable, ranging from 12% to 16%, contributing to its rich taste. Moreover, the Hall Avocado has a better flesh-to-seed ratio compared to other varieties like the Choquette.
The Hall Avocado is considered a mid to late-season avocado, with the best time to pick the fruits being when they are mature on the tree. This variety was first propagated in Miami, Florida by Willis Hall in the 1930s, and has since become a favorite among avocado enthusiasts.
In summary, the Hall Avocado is a fantastic choice for both commercial and home planting due to its unique characteristics and delicious fruits. It’s not just a tree, but a testament to the wonders of nature and the joy of gardening. Add the Hall Avocado to your garden today and enjoy the fruits of your labor for years to come.
