J-31 Jackfruit – A Taste of the Tropics

The J-31 Jackfruit Tree, a Malaysian variety, is known for its large, irregularly shaped fruits and prolific production. This tree is an excellent choice for those who want to enjoy a high yield of homegrown jackfruit, even in limited space.

Tree Characteristics:

  • Size & Growth: The J-31 is a compact tree, easily maintained at a height of 6.5 to 8 feet with regular pruning, making it suitable for small gardens or home orchards.
  • Temperature Tolerance: Thrives in USDA Zones 9B-11, with a good tolerance for colder temperatures, though it performs best in warmer, tropical climates.
  • Production Capability: A prolific producer, the J-31 yields between 92 to 132 lbs of fruit per year. The tree is also known for producing off-season fruit during the fall and winter, providing a steady supply of jackfruit throughout the year.

Fruit Characteristics:

  • Fruit Size: The fruits are large and irregularly shaped, typically weighing around 26 lbs. Their deep green exterior is covered in blunt spines that protect the treasure within.
  • Flesh Quality: Inside, you’ll find firm, deep yellow flesh, which makes up about 36% of the fruit’s weight. The texture is firm, with a rich, sweet flavor and a strong, earthy aroma that makes the fruit a delight to the senses.
  • Latex Type: Moderate latex, but the fruit is relatively easy to clean when fully ripe.
  • Harvest Time: While the main fruiting season occurs in summer, the tree’s ability to produce off-season fruit in fall and winter is a unique feature of the J-31 variety.

Care Tips:

The J-31 thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Regular pruning helps maintain its compact size, making it easier to harvest the large fruits. Ensure the tree receives consistent watering, and be mindful of temperature drops during cold weather, especially if you’re growing it outside of tropical zones.
